Did you know that two of our English teachers, Ms. Black and Ms. Davis, were recipients of Collaborative Classroom Space Grants from MCPS this year?
That, combined with additional funds from the PTSA, these two dynamic teachers have created a whole new way of approaching Advanced English in 8th Grade?
Since 6th Grade, progressively more of the current 8th Grade students have been moved into Advanced English, so that now all of our 8th Grade English classes are using the Advanced curriculum. Over the past three years, has proven successful: these 8th grade students have bridged the achievement gap in English, with an 86.6% success rate on the MAP-R across all demographics. In addition, this year two classrooms have been combined, flexible seating has been added and students are offered an individualized and blended learning environment.
There have been some concerns about the teacher-to-student ratio in these classes, however, as you can see from the chart below, all periods are actually below the recommended class size cap.
Many other schools in MCPS have moved to this model of collaborative classrooms, and are experiencing great success. Ms. Jorandby welcomes parents to share their questions, concerns and positive feedback about how this class is working for their students.
