On April 25, Sligo began its inaugural PTSA-funded Artist in Residence Program with Chesapeake Shakespeare Company. Shakespeare is part of the required MCPS curriculum in 6th, 7th, 8th grade, and beyond. This program introduces our students to Shakespeare’s plays, history, and language through performances and in-class workshops. Every Sligo student will see a performance at a school assembly. And every Sligo student will participate in multi-day workshops within their English classes. They will be led in imaginative exercises and coached in sonnets or scenes from various Shakespeare plays. This program is all about hands-on experiences for the kids and bringing the text to life. They are acting, moving, and fully participating!
This fantastic experience is 100% funded by the Sligo PTSA. These funds come directly from your PTSA donations and the amazing work the Fundraising Committee did raising money through the Fitness Fun Run. Many other MCPS schools with rigorous academic program s have long held these Shakespeare workshops for their students. The Sligo PTSA is excited to help bring this program to our school, and a big thank you to the Sligo administration and staff, especially Mr. Dimmick, Mr. Lear, Ms. Finkbinder, and Ms. Mitchell-Anderson, for their dedicated efforts towards and enthusiastic support of this new initiative.
