Sligo Middle School has a unique volunteering opportunity available for those in the community interested in supporting literacy. Read 180 is a 90 minute block period during which students who need extra help with reading are supported. The class consists of whole group instruction as well as rotations. During rotations, students complete work in small groups with the teacher, use Read 180 software on the computer, and read independently.
Volunteers would step in during rotations to pull individual students to an adjacent room for one-on-one reading support during the independent reading rotation. This support would consist of partner reading and a discussion of the book. Volunteers would work with the same students each week, enabling students and volunteers to build a working relationship. Volunteers will be trained and provided with materials, so don’t worry if this is your first time in a reading classroom!
The commitment is flexible in terms of which days of the week you would like to come in. You would work with each student for about 15 minutes, 45 minutes total. The times would generally be from 8:55-9:45 in the morning or from 12:55-1:45 in the afternoon. You are welcome to join us for one or both of those blocks.
